Leaning against the window, she saw it again, the movement of the water looking like bark on the trunk. Frame and a snap. Before she could stop herself, she clicked off another picture. If she just turned slightly the tree would be perfect. There it was on the little screen when she looked down. Obviously a mighty oak, and just as clearly a river surrounded by jungle.
Case leaned over. "You did it, honey." His voice was as warm as his smile. "My mom's going to love it."
His appeal was getting too big. Did he have to be the kind of man who was thoughtful to his mother? "Do you send her pictures often?"
"Every week, or she sends me e-mails letting me know about it. She figures if she has to deal with a son living in the DRC, the least I can do to compensate her by sending her pictures of the beauty here."
"Is she mad you moved here?" She returned to her seat.
"Not mad. Mom would never be mad at us for living our life. Now, she doesn't like it.
Just like she didn't like it when my brother and I joined the army, but she lives with it."
That was a lot of information to process. She flipped back through the pictures she'd taken. The only one she'd seen was the last. The camera disappeared from her hand.
"You can't look through those." A scowl had replaced his smile. What had she done to make him mad? The camera?
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bother your things."
He tucked the camera back in the pocket and his face relaxed. "You're not bothering it.
I'll let you know if she likes it."
What could he have on there she couldn't see? Maybe she shouldn't be so trusting of this man. What exactly did he do?
"Are you still in the army?" She smiled and kept her voice light
